Classic Movie Downloads You May Have Forgotten
There have been so many movies made over the last century that it can be hard to choose titles for your movie downloads. New films seem to appear daily, crowding out older ones. However, there are many movies that remain true classics but are often overlooked.
In 1958, the film "A Night to Remember" was released, and it may be the most authentic account regarding the Titanic sinking. It featured a large cast, but probably the best known to American audiences were Honor Blackman, Kenneth More, and David McCallum. At the time it was written, there were many survivors still living, and extensive interviews were conducted, providing many details about the night.
John Wayne made many films, but there are a few that stand out, and not just because they starred John Wayne. "Stagecoach" is credited with making him a star, and is an excellent film. However, his performances in "The Shootist", "The Quiet Man", "The Sands of Iwo Jima", "The Searchers", and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" were some of the most outstanding ones he ever turned in. And another of his films, "The High and the Mighty" was the first of the disaster films offering an ensemble cast. The movie, made in 1954, was unavailable for a long time and has only recently been offered on DVD. It concerns an airplane in serious trouble halfway between Hawaii and California.
If you prefer to combine your romance with comedy, check out "Pride and Prejudice" with Greer Garson as the prejudiced one and Laurence Olivier as the proud one. It is based on a novel by Jane Austen, and is a period piece of parents seeking husbands for five daughters. "The Philadelphia Story" serves up Katherine Hepburn as a blue-blood about to remarry. Cary Grant, as the ex-husband, arranges for reporter Jimmy Stewart to cover the ceremony for a disreputable tabloid.
If horror is your preference, the 1973 film, "The Legend of Hell House" stars Roddy McDowell as a medium who returns to the house that almost took his life. And of course, "The Exorcist" and "Poltergeist" have stood the test of time and remain classics.
You may have never even heard of "55 Days at Peking" or "The Gods Must Be Crazy". The first movie is about the siege in 1900 of all the foreign embassies in the capital of China by the Boxers. Among the stars are David Niven, Charlton Heston, and Ava Gardner. The second movie tells the story of a bottle that is thrown out of a plane and found by Bushmen. They consider it a token dropped by their gods. Unfortunately, it completely disrupts their peaceful society, and one man is designated to take it to the end of the earth. He encounters some hilarious offbeat characters along the way.
Good mysteries to consider include "Rebecca", "Death on the Nile", "Witness for the Prosecution" and "Murder on the Orient Express." Or if you want your comedy broad, check out "Hold That Ghost" with Abbott and Costello, Cary Grant in "Bringing up Baby" or one of the Road pictures Hope and Crosby made, such as "Road to Utopia".
Other titles you might want to consider include "Damn the Defiant!", "Ice Station Zebra", "Marty", "Pork Chop Hill", and "Command Decision". Of course, there are thousands of other films that are just as worthy.
The secret of finding a great picture is to spend some time browsing. Look beyond the hit list and search for films of interest to you. Once you develop the habit, you will surely find hundreds of movie downloads to enjoy.
