Can A Dog Silencer Stop Dog Barking

My neighbor's dog, although a really great dog, happens to bark the night away and really disturbs me. I thought this was a fact of life and I never even thought of using a dog silencer before. I wasn't even sure they existed, and if so, how to get one. I did however read an article in a pet journal which talked about a product to stop dog barking but I didn't take it much further than that at the time. Then trolling through my channels, I saw it again on an infomercial.

For the most part my own dog is relatively well behaved and doesn't bark a whole lot. Only, when company comes or the kids get him riled up but my neighbor's dog is a different story. She's a great dog but my bedroom window happens to be very close to my property line and seems even closer to the neighbors patio where the dog roams late at night. I know dog barking is instinctual but getting a break once in awhile would be incredible.

Most dog barking stems from a desire to communicate. We have all heard the heroic stories of dogs saving people by alerting them to danger or trouble and we surely don't want to stifle that behavior so what is the best approach?

Whenever I think of a dog silencer, I think of shock collar. It doesn't seem like a very good method to me and I'm not a fan of this inhumane treatment of animals. It also seems like positive reinforcement would be in order here and shocking a dog probably isn't very positive. These collars deliver and electrical pulse whenever the owner decides to administer it in hopes the dog will learn this is because he barked. It could be effective but rest assured the dog isn't gonna like it.

Next is the dog whistle. These things are pretty popular for all types of training. The frequency of the whistle annoy the dog enough to pay attention to the trainer and hopefully over time will learn to associate the sound with the command to stop the behavior. This is great but training can be tough and what about the neighbor's dog that I can't train?

This leads me to training in general. There are lots of successful training methods and several different ways to teach commands to your dog. One of the most popular is hand signals. It might take a while with this type of training as well, but judging by its popularity on all the television shows it probably works. But again, we are talking about time, most likely some significant money for classes and of course what about dogs that are not our own.

To me, the above make the ultrasonic dog silencers all the more attractive. Even though I'm seeing them on infomercials, I know there are several brands out there and some work differently than others. I'm most interested in the type that you just have to turn on and don't have to do anything else.

I would love something that was just simple. I want to turn it on and when the dog barks this magical wave it emitted and the dog stops barking. The bark off works this way and I like the concept. In theory when the dog barks he is focused on whatever is commanding his attention. This ultrasonic wave serves to distract the dog and interrupt the dog's barking pattern. That's all, plain and simple.

Not sure if these devices work in all cases because every dog is different. Some are aggressive, some passive while some are extremely vocal and others timid. I think it really depends on the personality and breed of the dog. The good news is that bark off for one is only $10 so it is cheap enough to try on your dog regardless of the outcome.

Bark Off worked well for my dog who unfortunately was never my problem. The neighbor's dog barks a little less but I have no real proof it was do to the bark off but I keep it by my bed anyway.

Using a dog silencer to stop dog barking seems to be a viable option. It seems that there are varying degrees of success depending on the animal but one thing is for sure. If you do not have access to the dog you want to stop barking, then an ultrasonic dog silencer may be your best shot at peace and quiet.
