Be Sure You’re All Set For Your Cheerleading Competition

There are several things that need to be done when you are getting ready to participate in cheerleader competitions. In order to make everything run smoothly you should start preparing for certain parts of the event as early as 3 months prior to the competition. There are a few cheerleading tips that just may make a difference between looking good, and winning or losing.

Roughly three months in advance of the competition, you have to inspect the uniforms to see if they need alterations. If so, then there will be plenty of time to have them altered as needed. A list needs to be put together of all the stunts that the squad plans to execute, including pyramids, running and tumbling, standing tumbling and any others that the squad has been learning and practicing. Keep in mind that at this time they don't have to be flawlessly performed; just carried out safely.

Choosing the music for cheerleading routines is another item that should be taken care of about 3 months prior to the competition. You can choose to have it custom made to your routine or you can use music that is pre-mixed. Once the music has been selected, the squad needs to begin practicing the stunts and moves they will perform. Most cheerleader competitions adhere to a strict time limit (about 2 minutes) so you need to be sure to finish a few seconds under the time limit or the team will be penalized.

Around two months prior to the competition you should prepare a tentative schedule to be given to parents, so as to be sure that there will be no scheduling issues. It will also give them a timeline by which to make certain all needed equipment will be collected, including hair accessories, shoes and socks, shorts, makeup, and so on. Be sure to indicate that it is only a preliminary schedule, as there are times when competitions are rescheduled or canceled. The squad also needs to continue practicing their routine, and checking it to make sure that it flows smoothly and that it meets all requirements.

About one month before the cheerleader competitions everyone should have the routine down and should concentrate on polishing all of the transitions. They should be practicing the entire routine complete with full tumbling and stunts several times during every practice. It is also a good idea to make cheerleading videos of the routine so that everyone can review it later. It's a great way to discover where the weak spots are and how to make improvements. At about 2 weeks before the event the team should have dress rehearsals in full uniform in front of an audience, in order to help prepare for the competition.

Cheerleaders are incredible at motivating the crowd into rooting for their home team. But there is a great deal more to cheerleading than that. Get the facts on NFL cheerleading and more at Cheerleading 101.
